Tree of Peace Planting (2019)

In September 2019 this Tree of Peace was planted in the tradition of Mohawk Chief Jake Swamp and The Tree of Peace Society here on the land known to the Tewa as Where The Buffalo Come in Ogah’pogeh (White Shell Water Place) (Santa Fe, NM) .

This event inspired a 2nd Tree of Peace Planting for Indigenous Peoples Day at the Santa Fe Waldorf School. It also inspired the creation of a Bare Root Nursery that is currently growing out 50 more small White Pines to be available for future tree plantings.

Thank you to the 100 or so people in attendance and Gil Vigil (Tesuque Pueblo Tewa), Oren Lyons (Onondaga), Clayton Brascoupé (Mohawk), Margaret Brascoupé (Tesuque Pueblo Tewa), John Stokes (European-American), Will Channing (European-American), Ibrahim Loeks (European-American) and Louisa Putnam (European-American) for helping plant this White Pine here along the banks of the Arroyo de Los Chamisos. Thank you to John Kahiones Fadden for his permission to use his artwork for this event.

Watch the Tree of Peace planting here on the Native Media Network. After the Tree of Peace Planting, the day continued with a wonderful panel of speakers at a Wings of America sponsored event called the Great Turtle Talks. Dustin Martin, Roxanne Swentzel, Oren Lyons and Joy Harjo continued to share their perspectives, wisdom and experiences which planted many seeds for us at Mother Nature Center.
