Launch of American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence and the Oren Lyons Legacy Archive

Mother Nature Center Celebrates the Launch of American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence and the Oren Lyons Legacy Archive

July 4, 2026

Mother Nature Center proudly celebrates the release of American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence and the continued development of the Oren Lyons Archive and Research Project at Syracuse University, two important milestones that help preserve and share Indigenous teachings, leadership, and wisdom for future generations.

The newly released book, American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence, invites readers into an important conversation about the origins of democratic governance and the enduring relevance of Indigenous knowledge, values, and systems of relationship in addressing the challenges of our time. The book explores how Indigenous principles of responsibility, reciprocity, and interdependence can help guide society toward a more just, peaceful, and sustainable future.

The launch is complemented by the ongoing establishment of the Oren Lyons Archive and Research Project, housed at Syracuse University. The archive preserves decades of speeches, correspondence, photographs, recordings, and other materials documenting the life and work of Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation and one of the most influential Indigenous voices of the modern era. The archive serves as a resource for scholarship, education, environmental stewardship, Indigenous rights, and future generations seeking guidance in an increasingly complex world.

For Mother Nature Center, it has been a profound honor to play a small supporting role in this work.

For many years, the teachings and guidance of Oren Lyons and Dr. José Barreiro have helped shape the direction of our efforts on behalf of Mother Earth, healthy communities, food sovereignty, ecological restoration, and the wellbeing of future generations. Their reminders to think beyond ourselves, to consider the impacts of our actions on the seventh generation, and to recognize our responsibilities to the natural world have deeply influenced our mission and programs.

Oren Lyons has consistently called upon humanity to remember that our future depends upon our ability to live in balance with one another and with the Earth. Through decades of advocacy, diplomacy, education, and cultural leadership, he has offered a vision rooted in peace, responsibility, and respect for all life.

The preservation of these teachings through both this publication and the archive ensures that future generations will have access to a body of knowledge that is increasingly relevant as communities around the world seek pathways toward resilience, cooperation, and ecological health.

Mother Nature Center extends its deepest gratitude to Oren Lyons, Dr. José Barreiro, Syracuse University, Guani Press, and the many individuals whose dedication has made this work possible.

May these teachings continue to inspire people everywhere to care for the land, strengthen their communities, and make decisions worthy of the generations yet to come.
